I didn't start out as a farmer. Anything but. In fact, I was convinced that I had a black thumb. When I moved to Vernonia Oregon, the capital of the floodplain, I had no plans whatsoever to grow a garden.The Great Northwest has its own particular issues. The gardening books on the shelf didn't address what to do about the river running through the middle of the driveway twice a year or explain how to grow in dirt that was red clay. Once plants did start to grow, there were slugs, deer, and rodents that quickly moved in and devoured the crops. Nothing the books said to do was working.After a while, I tossed the books and started to experiment on my own. This book is the result of that trial and error. I sincerely hope it makes at least one person decide it is worth the work to have a garden in the great North Wet. That is what motivates me as I type. And may the pods be ever in your favor.
